Hours of Game Show Entertainment - Reviewed on 2008-11-10
I'm a huge trivia buff and a pretty big fan of JEOPARDY! I've auditioned for the actual game show several times, but have never been selected. For now I'll have to settle with the next best thing, the JEOPARDY! video game on PS2. The game offers several options that allow you to either play by yourself, play with two computer opponents, or play with up to two other people. The game saves your stats so you can get a rough idea of how you might do on the actual show. You can change the difficulty setting to make the game more challenging or make if you find something too can alter things to make it more competitive for you to play. After you've created a profile and won a specific amount of money, you can play the Tournament of Champions contest. Like the real life game, this contest has questions more difficult than the regular game.
As far as game design goes, the game looks and has the feel of JEOPARDY! The colors and sounds are the same as they are on the show.
However, there are some flaws. For starters, there are slow load screens between the various rounds of the game and Alex Trebek tends to say the same phrases over and over. You can skip most of the Alex comments by pushing the start button, but there's nothing you can do about the slow load times. The game can also be rather touchy with selections. Sometimes you'll type in a word and only be a letter off and get the answer wrong and other times you can almost completely misspell a word and get the answer correct. The biggest flaw of the game is that there are only about 5,300 different answers. If you play the game often enough you will see repeats of the same categories and sometimes even the same answers. In my experience, it doesn't happen as often in the Tournament of Champions, but maybe that's because I haven't played that feature as often, yet.
If you're a fan of the show and own a PS2, this game is a good buy and contains hours of trivia, game show entertainment.
