It's Good - Reviewed on 2005-03-19

It's a great album, regardless of whether it's drone, drone, drone, or not. I never get tired of these tracks, and the more I listen to them, the more I like them. When I first heard the CD I thought it was a good sleep aid. Now I have a hard time sleeping with it on because I began to notice it's nuance, and can't quit paying attention to the subtle detail. This is the only album of minimal/drone based music that holds my attention all the way through. Everything can't be breakcore. God bless KFW.

Keith Fullerton Whitman is a master at his game. Those unaccustomed to listening to "experimental" music may take awhile to come to understand the grandiosity of the full epic scope of this masterpiece. He only plays about 5 notes throughout the whole album, but they are perfectly chosen notes and expressed well. Recommended for those who wish to explore what ambient textures can evolve into.

After the spazzy freakouts of the last Hrvatski album, Playhroughs seems like a complete about-face, dropping the drill and bass and picking up drones and textures with processing and Pole-ish filter fluffery. Genius or otherwise, I'll leave that debate to others more enlightened, but this disc has been a welcome companion while tweaking code or administering servers. Fits well in my jukebox playlist with Biosphere and Freeform.

This cd is an extremely well conceived collection of works by Mr.Whitman. Each track is multi-layered and expertly crafted. Keith's background seems to be more that of an electronic composer with an eye to the minimalists and early tape experiments of the 50's and 60's than that of a DJ with a shiny new laptop and only a moderate understanding of HOW music works.

The works all follow a coherent form throughout the cd, adding textural displacement over the rather thick sounds.

Reading the 1st two reviews, I had to feel a bit bad for these fellows, as they are missing out on possibly one of the best sonic experiences to happen last year.

I read on a well respected music review site that this album was remarkable, moving etc... Please, please dont buy this. I love all kinds of music, Radiohead, Neutral Milk Hotel, Miles Davis and i am open minded but i cant belive that someone thought that this could pass for 1/10 let alone a 9/10. I suspect the reviewer was trying to impress you with his "openmindedness".

You can save yourself 15 bucks by recording your own Playthroughs: Instructions:

Step 1) Take a keyboard, hit a note....for at least one minute, then change the way the note sounds....slightly...3 minutes later add another note....change the way that note sounds....slightly.......wait 5 minutes

Step 2)Start New song, use a different sound, repeat Step 1).

Wow....this isnt music, its arrogant and pretensious .... I know there are those of you that think you are openminded and experimental (like me) are drawn to these kinds of descriptions, but Playthroughs doesnt have anything in it that will impress you. Sorry if i hurt your feeling mr Keith F. W.
