Loss and resilience figure heavily in A New Day at Midnight, David Gray's follow-up to his massively popular breakthrough, White Ladder, in 1999. Gray cloaks his painful subject in the kind of impressive songcraft that has marked his work since 1993's A Century Ends. Still, both Ladder and Midnight add a layer of flash to his dependable formula, as dashes of studio trickery and understated electronics (helped along by songwriting partner Clune) give Gray's wistful lyrics and bittersweet, emotive voice a tough-to-resist freshness. Midnight exploits Gray's singing for maximal effect, as songs like the opener, "Dead in the Water," mask sad words with bright reminders of catharsis and faith. At times, Gray could use a little more faith in simplicity. Some songs--"Freedom," for one--could stand just fine with only Gray's voice and a guitar. More often than not, though, Gray's natural, amiable phrasing and ability to create a mood show off his continued growth while staying firmly in the groove that's made him a star. --Matthew Cooke

I bought this CD at the same time that I bought one of his previous album's, White Ladder. This is a great follow up to White Ladder, an album I didn't think he could top for its simple appeal. He's finally getting the recognition he deserves.

I purchased this CD as a gift for my wife. She loves it and plays it alot! I noticed my wife has also put it in the CD rotation to play in the background when we are entertaining in our home. Friends have commented favorably.
I had not heard of David Gray prior to her request for the CD, however I am glad she asked. David's vocals and material is easy to listen to. I will have to look at his other albums.

David Gray hit it big with the massive selling album, White Ladder, but its follow up may just be better than the blockbuster. White Ladder have some amazing melodies, but this album has more subtle melodies of its own that are equally beautiful. A New Day At Midnight contains some amazing tracks such as "Dead In The Water", "Real Love", "Knowhere", "Be Mine", and "The Other Side" that make it one of the best albums I have ever heard. Amazing effort.
As usual, no complaints about a good thing. - Reviewed on 2006-04-23

I am a new fan of David Gray, though I have heard his song for several years, January Rain caught my ear with friends the other week and I quickly purchased 3 CDs. I am not disappointed at all. His unique voice has a hint of the style in the late 70s, and with todays accents. He is an accomplished musician and can sing up a storm, with his mellow raspy voice. His songs are a delight to sit back and picture in your mind being seated next to him or playing along. Just a very down to earth style of music. I will buy more of David Gray.

David Gray gave us "White Lader" and I guess I was waiting for something greater or at least equally good. Instead we got a couple of good songs and the rest is forgettable. He vinidicated himself, at least to me, with his latest "Live In Slow Motion"
