Perhaps Stripes and Caddyshack screenwriter Harold Ramis and Commando director Mark Lester were not an ideal collaborative team. But while this 1986 misfit comedy is something of a misfire, SCTV fans can take heart in watching John Candy and Eugene Levy triumph over weak material as mismatched security guards who stumble upon mob corruption. Candy, in particular, does wonders with a role that in lesser hands would have been a mere "fatty falls down" stereotype. He plays a cynical disgraced cop who takes Levy's cowardly former lawyer under his wing ("Stick with me, I'll keep you out of trouble," he reassures him). Like Ramis's character in Stripes, Levy rises to the occasion under fire, and even gets the girl--Meg Ryan in early ingénue mode, trying out the fetching grins and ingratiating smiles that would make her America's sweetheart three years later in When Harry Met Sally. --Donald Liebenson

As Funny As Ever - Reviewed on 2008-11-24

John Candy was one of the funniest actors of all time. What a shame that his life was cut so short. There are no comedies like this one and all his others (Uncle Buck, Only the Lonely, Cool Runnings and so on) How lucky we are to have been entertained by him.

What a classic! I remember this when I was much younger. It would come on HBO and my mom would record it, but edit out all the bad stuff. It was so great to see it in it's entirety!
Classic John Candy as Dooley and Eugene Levy as Cane. Hilarious!!! Oh and Meg Ryan was soo cute before all the lip injections! It's funny to look at people back in the day and now. 99% of them should've left themselves alone!
ONE OF THE WORST - Reviewed on 2008-06-13

one of the worst movies I've seen for awhile. From Meg Ryan's bad hair to the lame writing. Sorry!

While not one of the best comedy's of the 80's it's still good fun. Eugene Levy & John Candy really work well together and that comes across while watching the movie. There's also a capable supporting cast to back them up. If you like John Candy then this film is for you.

This movie is about as hysterical as you can get. The parody of armed guards is hysterical but frightening. Everything is funny in this movie and Meg Ryan is absolutely gorgeous.
