If she had made her mark only through the garish video to "Love Is a Battlefield," Pat Benatar would still stand as a '80s icon. Ah, but there were so many more '80s pop rock, just-this-side-of-new-wave hits to her name, including radio staples such as "You Better Run," "Hit Me with Your Best Shot," and "Heartbreaker," all of which are included in this short, sharp retrospective. Benatar and her husband and bandleader, Neil Geraldo, specialized in romantic anthems that are as hooky as they are bombastic. Eschewing the playfulness of contemporary female rivals such as Debbie Harry and the Go-Go's (and staking out the middle ground between them and Heart), Benatar ultimately surpassed the new wavers by staying in character: this was a tough chick who didn't take any guff. Period! As she lost interest in that role, her popularity flagged, but that's another album. These are just the hits. --W.C. Sweeney
