Two comely teenage lesbian lovers from Russia who happen to sing? That seems more like marketing masterstroke than pop music likelihood, so it's fair to question the authenticity of t.A.T.u.'s English language debut. It's impossible to know where t.A.T.u.'s talent begins and ends and just how much influence their various handlers and producer Trevor Horn had over 200 Km/h in the Wrong Lane, but it's probably a moot point to the intended demographic. Horn's background working with electro-pop dandies Pet Shop Boys and Frankie Goes to Hollywood is evident in the crisp, driving synth cushioning singers Lena Katina and Julia Volkova's gossamer vocals. Wink-nudge lyrical references to girls loving girls--presented in serviceable if phonetic English--are in evidence, though they're more coy than graphic. "All the Things She Said," a sparkly, chorus-driven rave-up, seems to make the case for sexual equality, while "Show Me Love"--which appears in regular and extended versions--is a dance floor missive aimed straight at the clubs. Best, though, is an unintentionally ironic cover of the Smiths' "How Soon Is Now." The song, a benchmark of loneliness and hopelessness, is utterly transformed into a chirpy duet which, all things considered, may be the best gimmick of all! --Kim Hughes
Customer Reviews
Some of the best electronic pop music that I've ever heard. - Reviewed on 2008-01-28
I still am having a hard time thinking why t.a.t.u.'s music is looked down upon by many fans of pop music. This IS pop music, plain and simple. And some of the greatest pop music that I've heard in a LONG time. I bought this cd after hearing "All the Things She Said," because I just loved the dark, trippy-esque atmosphere of the song. If you're a fan of albums that have a certain "feel" or "atmosphere" to them (like me), this is a great record to by.
I mean, they are not your average pop rock band, If you are able to push aside all of that hubbub about lesbians and not writing their own songs. You need to look at it for what it is.....a electronic pop record. If you don't worry about who wrote the songs or the sexual appeal of the videos, this is a GREAT album. I still listen to it on occasion.
Ever have an album that you just listen to at night? For me, things like Portishead's "Dummy" and the Gorillaz' Self titled debut are just a few of my "night-driving" cds......And now I'm adding "200 Km/H in the Wrong Lane" to my list of albums for the night. While it's really hard to explain the atmosphere of this record, I'd like to again point out albums like "Dummy" and "Gorillaz".....every song just works off of one another so well that the cd, as a whole, actually has an "atmosphere" to it. And THAT is when you know that you have some good songs.
All-in-all, this is a GREAT record, ESPECIALLY for fans of atmospheric moods or tendencies. Again, try and listen to it at night! It makes the album twice as good, in my opinion!
