A retro hyperboost to video game heaven - Reviewed on 2008-04-14

As a typical 70s and 80s kid, I played all these games, and framed some of my most basic childhood memories around where my friends and I played them. Of course I bought this album, and was thoroughly entranced. Assuming you fit this demographic, this product might be a great blast from the past, or could prove impossibly corny. Perhaps the very fact that I remember Pac Man Fever all these years later is its best testimonial. Enjoy!!

I had this album back in 1982. After Buckner & Garcia had a hit with their novelty song "Pac-Man Fever", they recorded an entire album of novelty songs about video games. The songs were silly, of course, but mostly enjoyable (to my teenage brain, at least). This CD features re-recorded versions of all the songs on the album. I can't tell you how close these versions are to the original versions, since I haven't heard the original album in over 20 years. But if you want the Pac-Man Fever album on CD, I guess this is better than nothing.

Back in the early 1980's,video arcades were highly patronized by young, but not small, children. I'm sure lots of pre-teens and teens in 1982,when this album was originally released on Columbia Records, had "PAC-MAN FEVER". Unfortunately, that was the only major hit for Jerry Buckner and Gary Garcia. I remember back in '82,I bought the Atari 2600 video game system, which was a hot item back then. After coming home from school,I'd want to play video games aside from watching television. I got the Pac-man video game cartridge with the system, which was not included with the system(Combat was). The seven additional tracks on this album were inspired by other popular games,Frogger,Centipede,Donkey Kong,Asteroids,Defender,Mousetrap and Berzerk. This LP was one of my Christmas 1982 gifts, which I still have. You can see on the cover,Pac-man in action. The dots, the pills, the "monsters" that can't be eaten except when they're blue(they turn blue after Pac-man eats one of the pills),and of course,Pac-man.

One of the all time great albums. Pac-man Fever speaks for itself, but if you have not heard gems like "Donkey Kong" "Froggy's Lament" "Goin' Berserk" and the epic "Ode to a Centipede" obtain this album immediately. You will not regret it.
Yes, it's a re-recording - Reviewed on 2005-08-05

I agree that it's disapointing that the original LP hasn't been reissued -- I imagine Buckner and Garcia wish it would be, too. The fact is, though, for some reason Sony/CBS is sitting on it, so this is the best that we can do. Viewed in that light, I don't think this qualifies as a rip-off. The guys have stuck to 80s style arrangements. There is no attempt to "update" the sound. Yes, the vocals are showing some wear, yes there are some variations. But the simple fact is, this thing is still a total gas.
