The heavily promoted Yu-Gi-Oh plays like a mixture of Pokémon, Medabots, and Card Captor Sakura. Yugi, an aspiring champion at Duel Monster Cards, is coached by his kindly grandfather. The Cards are a tame version of an ancient Egyptian game involving real monsters: 5,000 years ago, a wise Pharaoh hid this magic in five Millennium Objects. Yugi defeats rich champion Kaiba, which brings him to the attention of Maximillion (sic) Pegasus, the owner of Industrial Illusions, the manufacturer of the Cards. Pegasus somehow steals the grandfather's soul, forcing Yugi to enter a tournament in the Duelist Kingdom. Unlike Pokémon, which emphasizes friendship and sportsmanship, Duel Card players gleefully cheat. Much of the show feels like an extended plug, and parents who buy the videos should be prepared for demands for cards and toys. (Unrated; suitable for ages 8 and older: mild monster vs. monster violence) --Charles Solomon

This Is Where It All Began - Reviewed on 2007-09-14

Yu-Gi-Oh! is a great TV series, but not just for kids - I have found out that many adults have too become addicted to the show. The series is about a young high school boy named Yugi Motou who enjoys playing the popular card game: Duel Monsters. However, things turn topsy-turvy for Yugi and his three best friends (Joey, Tea, and Tristan) when he -someone who has never even entered a tournament- wins a "duel" (a game of Duel Monsters) against the World Champion, Seto Kaiba. People start wondering how an amateur could win against someone so experienced at the game. Maximillion Pegasus, the inventor of the game, becomes extremely impressed with Yugi and invites him to the newest Duel Monsters tournament, taking place at Pegasus's very own island...Duelist Kingdom! Unfortunately, not everything is simply about a card game. Pegasus is the owner of the Millennium Eye, an ancient Egyptian artifact that holds incredible powers. There are 7 of these artifacts (Yugi possessing the powerful Millennium Puzzle) that will give supreme power to anyone who holds all 7. Unbeknownst to Yugi, his favorite card game (Duel Monsters) isn't a modern card game - it is suspiciously linked to the 7 Egyptian artifacts, as the card game was actually played in Ancient Egypt thousands of years ago...but with real monsters! Pegasus sucks the soul out of Yugi's grandfather, forcing him to enter in the Duelist Kingdom tournament to win back his grandpa's spirit. But poor Yugi has no idea that Pegasus is after his Millennium Puzzle - which is the home to the spirit of the Millennium Puzzle (Yugi's alter ego). Here are the episodes included on this DVD:

1. "THE HEART OF THE CARDS"
2. "THE GAUNTLET IS THROWN"
3. "JOURNEY TO DUELIST KINGDOM"

This DVD is really good because it contains some very fantastic episodes. The only let-down is that there are only 3 episodes, each 20 minutes long. In other words, it is only 1 hour for $20; but you can purchase all 49 episodes of the entire first season in a special edition box set. Besides that minor disappointment, this DVD is a great purchase because of its content. Yu-Gi-Oh! is an awesome show, very well-thought and with a phenomenal not-something-you-see-every-day-but-you-still-end-up-loving-it kind of plot. It is very well written and was apparently good enough to be translated into English. There are unnoticeable clues hidden in these first three episodes that foreshadow later events at the end of the season (see Grandpa`s poster in Episode 2) and even things in Seasons 2 and 5!!! This is a great DVD for any Yu-Gi-Oh! fan, or for anyone who enjoys a good cartoon. Plus, anyone can watch it becomes you have the choise of playing the epsiodes in English or Spanish! Despite some negative reviews, this is a pretty addicting show - but it won't make sense unless you see these first episodes! Season 1 of Yu-Gi-Oh! is simply "wow"-worthy! Please see my review of Yu-Gi-Oh, Vol. 2 - Into the Hornet's Nest.

Hi there i cant really say how i rate it because its been a while since ive seen it but i think its ok but i cant exactly say i love it but i will tell you what i remember. Yugi faces seto Kaiba because he i think kidnapped his grandpa or hurt him and he needed to go to the hospital so some of his friends take him while kaiba faces yugi and grabs some ripped pieces of one of the four blue eyes white dragons in the world that kaiba ripped up and kaiba has the other three then yugi faces kaiba and won barely with exodia the forbidden one! Then Yugi Gets a package from a guy named maximillion pegasus and he watches it with his friends tristen, Tai, His grandpa and i think bakura and then he gets sucked away i think in the shadow realm they duel before he could win the time ran out (The duel was being timed) He lost and his grandpas soul was the price so he had no choice but to enter his tournament to save his grandpa. His friend Joey came along to win the prize money for his sisters eye surgery because she was going blind and she needed eye surgery. and tai and tristen came to back there friends up and they didnt know bakura came and you see him on the boat well tai does anyway. ALso in these episodes weevil underwood the bug duelist throws some of yugis exodia pieces over board. They meet Mai valentine an excellent female duelist and a harpie lady duelistand my favorite character just to let you know im a guy yes it might be wierd for a guy to like a girl character but it isnt. Anyways Mai and rex raptor a great dinosaur duelist have a duel and the catch was if mai won she gets his room and he goes packin if he won she would give him a kiss! Mai Won with her mind trick you'll find more about that later!

This is a Yu-Gi-Oh DVD, it is way better to get it:
