I had the good fortune of being invited to Martina's release party for Cure for Bad Deeds in Toronto several years ago. I bought it at the door, and kept an eye out for future albums. I was sad to never hear of another one, but recently realized that there are actually two different Cures for Bad Deeds - I've now ordered this newer version, I hope the new tracks are up to the high standard set by the original version.

Thanks to Martina for more than a couple evenings spent with this CD - all her Toronto references help the homesick :)
Very nice, her voice is easy on the ears! - Reviewed on 2004-07-14

Before I review this CD, I'll tell how I found it:

One day I was reading the reviews of Jewel's lastest CD "0304." I love that CD, as well as Jewel's other albums: Pieces of You, Spirit, and This Way. I was really getting downhearted from all the rabid Jewel hate there was in each review, it was rampant! Everyone thought that just because Jewel had decided to 'go pop' she had 'sold out.' Personally, I think if you take a good look at the video for "Intuition" you'll see it's a big, fat satire on the whole pop thing! And as for her image and the rest of the pop songs on the album, they're all meant in fun too. Her focus on that album is a lot more on love and pop-type subject matter, but she still maintains her sarcastic savvy that makes her Jewel. I'll stop myself before this becomes a second review for that CD! :-)

Anyways, one reviewer said "Buy Martina Sorbara's CD 'Cure For Bad Deeds'! It's like what Jewel used to do before she sold out!" So, I opened the page for Martina's album. There was no Amazon.com review of it, but many times I don't find those to be helpful. All I saw of customer reviews (the few that there were) were great, so I decided to give it a try. I too like Martina's style! She's very laid-back, mellow. Yet she has this energy and charisma that shows through. Her lyrics are all over the place, and can get quite dark ('Better Man' finds her talking about being coerced into sex with a guy, what a creep he must be!)

Her vocals are so stunning...her voice, if I can try to describe it, is a mix of these artists' voice:

-Jewel (a hint of her...)
-Ani DiFranco
-Ginny Owens
-Norah Jones

It's a very good album and I'd like to see more from her. Give it a try!

Watched the movie "All I Want" featuring the song `Bonnie and Clyde` from this cd. Fell in love with that song, checked out the credits to see who performed this gem. *Blushes*--> Went to Kazaa and downloaded a song or two to see what some of her other songs were like. Fell in love with them as well. Went to Best Buy. Was approached by a sales guy there who could not find anything in their computer on Martina even after I spelled her last name for him like 4 times. Didn't take his advice, and looked for the CD myself after he walked away. Found one copy and snatched it up all for myself and snarled, "My Preeecciooouuuss!" Ran to the counter, purchased this wonderful cd and it has not been out of my cd player since. She is wonderful. Like Jewel before her all time sell out album. Poetic, quirky, beautifully performed, everything I've been looking for in an artist for some time now. So what have we learned here?
1) Kazaa is not all bad
2)Buy this CD
and most importantly
3) Never listen to the guy at Best buy when he tells you he doesn't see anything in the system on the artist you are looking for.
Now what are you waiting for... run... go buy this cd!!!!!!!!!!!

i saw martina opening up for jason mraz in concert and she was amaaazing! she makes her own guitars, writes her own songs, and also plays piano! she has a style that is a mix of folk, blues, jazz, and country... her voice is so powerful, yet subtle.
