I can not pretend to have deep knowledge of gospel music. I do not know how the Dixie Hummingbirds compare to other groups, nor do I know how this album compares to the rest of their material. I was simply wanting to hear some new -- to me -- music, and I cast around for some old gospel -- a genre I am not very familiar with. I ran across these guys, and this album.

I highly, highly, highly recommend it. Certainly anyone at all into Christian music should be familiar with this; this is wonderful religious music. But I also think that more secular listeners should not miss it. This is important music. Black Americans have contributed such an extraordinary amount to our nation's music, and most of us are not as familiar as we should be with their contribution. These are old masters of upbeat, mid-20th century gospel, as it is becoming soul. Anyone interested in religious music, black music or the development of American popular music should be familiar with this.

Going from 1953-75 in 12 tracks may seem criminal in covering this legendary Gospel group, but as a budget item this is a perfect introduction. There are brief liner notes that are informative, but it's the performances that tell the story. Ira Tucker's lead vocals are amazing as are the rest of the 'Birds. If you're just getting interested in the Dixie Hummingbirds than this is a good starter.
