For many jobs, a small cordless drill is you need. But if you have more demanding projects in mind, DeWalt's 18-volt 3/8-inch cordless compact drill/driver can get the job done. The DeWalt drill/driver operates at 0-450 and 0-1,500 rpm and delivers up to 400 in./lbs. of muscle to bore through wood, metal or masonry. With an all-metal 5-5-5 planetary gear transmission, this workhorse is built to last. But brute force is by no means the DeWalt's only charm. Handy features like an 18-position adjustable clutch, 3/8-inch keyless ratcheting chuck, integrated lock-off button, and electric brake make this tool as versatile as it is strong. Add to that a comfortable grip, light weight (just 4.5 pounds) and ergonomic design, and you have a pretty good contender in the 18-volt class.--Carl Thress

Reliable drill, typical DeWalt quality - Reviewed on 2008-08-20

This is an excellent drill. I've owned it for 3 years and used it pretty heavily during that time. The exterior of the drill is pretty beat up at this point, but everything still works the way it should. One of the batteries started draining quickly recently, and so I replaced it. The batteries carry a good charge, and I can get 4-6 hours of use out of them before losing power. The case the drill and charger come in is pretty good and clips shut tightly. Ultimately, I replaced it with a tool box because I like to have all my bits together with the drill and there was no room in the case that came with the drill to store them.

A feature I would love to see DeWalt adopt would be to flatten the back side of the drill and batter so that the drill could be set flat on its back and not tip over. This would be really useful when trying to use it in a confines space. I used to have an old Panasonic drill that was made that way, and it was great.

The drill has met my expectations. It is a replacement for a model 929 that failed shortly after the 1 year warranty expired. This drill has performed to my expectations so far. It is the 3rd dewalt battery-operated drill I've owned, and is one of many dewalt power tools I currently own.

I own 5 DeWalt products, the have proven to be tough and reliable, the only problem I have ever had is one of chucks go so tight It was unusable but that was after 3 years of use in machine building business.
