Ae's first computer album. Has an industrial tinge to it. Cipater is one of their best songs. There are no misses on this album.

Chiastic Slide is probably my favorite CD by Autechre. From the synchronized mechanical lunacy of "Cipater" to the "machinery breaking down" sound of the closing track called "Nuane." I believe that this is Autechre at the peak of their creativity and I believe this is where they've achieved their main intention of what the wanted to contribute to IDM. A few really good CD singles followed this album but some of the following albums started to show some "less-than-harmonic" noise passages that, only because they were so long, those sound passages were kinda weak. But, to this day, I still can't get enough of Autechre. And they are long overdue for their next album.

I have about 15 CD's of Autechre shuffling in my 200 CD carrousel. All these tracks by Autechre are being mixed up with tracks by Aphex Twin, Higher Intelligence Agency, Squarepusher, Pete Namlook, Biosphere, The Orb, Phutureprimitive, Sounds From the Ground, Plaid, Gescom, Electric Skychurch, Boards of Canada, Mira Calx, and various other similar artists of which Autechre truly belongs with.

So, are you addicted to Autechre yet? Many of us are. I think there should be a club. Here's a list of the releases so to make sure that you have all that is available:

The EP's of Garbage and Anvil Vapre are actually added to the American release of Tri Repatae which is why that album is a double CD.

There may be a few others, but they have become very rare. Very hard to find. I've discovered more tracks by Autechre and various other "remixed by Autechre" releases all over the IDM sound genre. Plus, some artists like Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, Boards of Canada and the such have released similar recording as that of Autechre, but Autechre will always be the leader of this sound.

And here's another little secret for you. Autechre has released recordings under another pseudonym, Gescom. There is nothing on CD available from Gescom, (except "MiniDisc" which is nothing very interesting at all), but that doesn't mean you can't find their better recordings through various person to person music swap sites.

Look for these Gescom albums (I think they are only available on vinyl, and maybe only in the UK and Europe):

There are various takes and re-developed versions of Keynell. Just knowing that Gescom is so scarce, especially in America, it only makes it all the more totally cool to be Proudly Unhipp, and to actually have these recordings.

I find a sense of comfort in the lunacy that is Autechre's music. I have to listen to Autechre every day. It's gotten harder to listen to regular music any more and it is certainly difficult to revert back to regular music immediately after switching off Autechre. Autechre is like a drug, a stimulant, a natural high. It's a sound that inspires motivation in what ever you are doing. And yes, I can get mildly depressed if I don't have some Autechre at my immediate avail. If I've got a lot of work to do, then I know I'll get it done (and fast), if I've got Autechre playing in my background.

I'm suprised there are so few reviews for this album, since it contains some of Autechre's most stunning moments. This is where Autechre really began to change, a great example are the shifting rhythm's, detail and minutaie that make up and seperate every beat in the song tewe. They're starting to explore new territory with this release, yet it's especially interesting since they maintain the lush fat textures of earlier works. This is one of the few examples of Autechre combining their early signatures with their latter signatures. Cipater is one of the sickest songs I've ever heard, it's kind of like machine hip-hop with an asiatic vibe. Cichli I feel is an electronic masterpiece, it's very vertical in nature, with the chilling harmonies of it's string section, that fuse beautifully with the dissonant nature of it's rhythm. It's like a fluctuating wave of tones and melody, coming at you in varying shades, beautiful. Even with all of this I can see the critics point of view on some aspects, there are tracks that carry on repetitavely for too long, and the album seems to peak somewhere around the middle. Nonetheless this is the Autechre album that I find myself returning to the most, being moved by the most, and it's essential in understanding their musical evolution.

When Autechre began changing their style, and expirementing with sound, it turned a lot of fans off. Not me though, i enjoy all their albums. and while i do prefer their more ambient side shown with Amber, I love this CD to death. Chiastic Slide may seem like the same beat over and over again with each track at first.. a few listens and you start to see the big picture. I wouldn't trade this album for anything
