Editorial Review

The classic card game UNO is now available in a special Harry Potter edition. Each card is beautifully illustrated with scenes and characters from Harry Potter's first book, The Sorcerer's Stone. The cards come packaged in a sturdy cardboard treasure chest with a faux woodgrain finish complete with gold detailing and a felt-covered plastic insert to hold the cards. Rules of play are almost identical to the original UNO game (players match cards by color and/or number and try to be the first to run out of cards), but new "cloak of invisibility" and "howler" command cards add a magical twist to classic gameplay. --Tami Horiuchi

We have owned Harry Potter Uno for over a year, and we love it. What I like best about it, as a parent and primary socializer of my step-daughter, is that she is better able to understand the complex relationships that constitute game play. We've been playing since she was 6, and now that she is close to 8 years old, she doesn't just go for the same color or the same number. She understands that she should play the higher value cards first, but more importantly, she understands how to hoard her powerful cards, like the "Draw 3" and "Draw 4 Wild" cards, to exact revenge, or to keep from [getting] her mother [to pick] a slew of cards (condemning me instead!!!).

The Invisibility and Howler cards have also given her some strategic perception which many of the other kids in the neighborhood don't possess.

As a parent, I think that this particular version of Uno was great for getting my step-daughter to learn the rules and how to be a cunning and occasionally merciless cardshark. The Harry Potter theme engaged her to exercise her mind initially, and now its the thrill of the game that keeps her playing.

Looking beyond her sometimes questionable motives, we have seen that she is much better at understanding complex relationships, both within the game and also in everyday life. We also feel that this is NOT something she learned in our (if you can believe it) very good public schools in our area.

If you play any form of Uno, this game is Dynomite! There are a very few special rule changes. For instance, the standard "Draw Two" is a "Draw Three" (with "Flufy" on the card). There are two special cards. "invisability card" protects you from a "Draw 4 Wild" (very cool card if played right, or can be played as just a wild card). The other special card "Howler" may be fun for kids, but we ignore it and play it as a standard wild card. If played as the instructions direct, the person it is played against must stand and call out every card in their hand. I would not tell my boy this rule! We have worn out 1 deck and are breaking in a second deck!

If you like the original Uno game, you'll love Harry Potter Uno. It's the same game... only better! First of all, I'm a huge Harry Potter fan, so of course I enjoy the Harry Potter theme. But, even if you don't think Harry is the greatest thing since sliced bread, this game can be fun for you. This game brings something new to Uno in the form of 2 new cards. The Howler and the Invisibility Cloak. The Howler is just plain fun. What's it for? You play it, like a wild card, and the next person has to shout (really shout) out all the cards in his or her hand. It is hilarious when you play it on someone with half the deck in their hand. Ha! And the Invisibility Cloak is a great addition for the strategic players. You play it defensively to keep you from drawing extra cards (or howling). Both cards add an exciting new element to the game.

There is really only one thing I don't like about Harry Potter Uno. Remember in original Uno... the draw two card? In this version it's draw three. Not a big change... but.. I don't know. Maybe it's because I'm a traditionalist or something. Adding cards is one thing... but changing one? But it's a petty issue. Really, it's a great game.

As I said before, if you like Uno, you'll love this.

As an UNO game lover for years, I was more than pleased with this purchase. From the case that it came in to the added features that helped make it a "Harry Potter" classic. My kids LOVE the HOWLER card. It cracks us up each time we have to HOWL out our cards. The Invisibility Cloak was just a great idea as well. We have more fun playing this game! Don't purchase "just" the card game at your local toy store.. This game comes in Harrys chest and it is just wonderfully packaged. A real keeper!

Uno is a fun game and favorite pastime among some card players. Harry Potter Uno is just as fun. I like seeing the pictures of characters from the Sorceror's Stone on the cards(very beautiful illustrations). I also like seeing how some things from the book can relate to the game, such as how the Mirror of Erised is pictured for reverse. One thing that Harry Potter Uno has that the original Uno doesn't have is a Howler, where you have to tell out loud what cards you have. One way that this game can be educational is that children can learn counting skills from it(even the little ones in my family like playing Harry Potter Uno). My whole family has always enjoyed reading Harry Potter together and now we have fun playing Harry Potter Uno together, which is another way that Harry Potter helps bring the family together!
