Editorial Review
This talking book comes with an interactive "magic pen" that works like a hand-held computer mouse pointer. Children can opt to turn the paper pages and listen to the story read with different voices for each character. Or they can interrupt the read-aloud session to play with the magic pen (permanently attached with a wire). They can point the pen tip to any word on a page and hear it pronounced, or touch a picture and hear a sound effect (such as "Strike one!" for the baseball bat). Very similar to the popular Living Books computer games, this 10-by-11-inch book is more portable than a home computer. Stories in this set include Lil's Loose Tooth, Richard Scarry's Best Word Book Ever, and Winnie the Pooh in A Sweet Good Morning. The set also includes a paper piano keyboard and map and human anatomy games. --Gail Hudson

We travel a lot in an RV and these things are great for long hours on the road. My girls absolutely love them and can play through the same books over and over. They're excellent learning tools, too. My 4 year-old knows all about dinosaurs now and can speak a lot of Spanish phrases, which she learned from these books. My 2 year-old is just starting to be able to actually use these as intended as far as following the prompts and answering the questions and playing the games, but she has also enjoyed playing with it for quite a while before now, just to press the buttons with the pen and see what happens and hear the funny sounds.
They have a lot of popular media titles including Dora, Dr. Seuss, Winnie the Pooh, Toy Story, The Wiggles, Spongebob, Spiderman, etc., but some of my girls' favorite books are the original books created directly for the toy, such as the What Will You Be? book which uses a built-in microphone to do a Mad Libs kind of thing. We've all had a lot of laughs with that one.
Batteries last a surprisingly long time in the machine and the books can be bought at a reasonable price if you search around places like Big Lots and eBay and here on Amazon. We have the MyFirst LeapPad, meant for toddlers, and the regular LeapPad, meant for preschoolers and elementary aged kids. Once my 4 year-old got the regular LeapPad, my 2 year-old had to play the "big girl" LeapPad, too, so we got another one for her and those are mostly the ones they play with now, but both of them still enjoy playing with the MyFirst LeapPad sometimes, too.
