Thanks to Boondock Saints - Reviewed on 2007-10-20

I must give thanks to the movie, Boondock Saints, for introducing me to Jeff Danna's music. The movie used one of their songs "The Blood of Cu Chulainn" as their theme song and now I am hooked!

I had one of their other CDs and wondered if this would be as good. It is.

I really enjoyed this cd. I had heard a sample of it while in a pet shop and had to have it. The music really pulls you in. Not to mention the bit of history you get reading the legend of Lladain and Curithur that is provided in the jacket. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys instrumentals that tell a story.

Just heard this CD for the first time and....WOW!!! What amazing vocals ....the soprano voice is so delicate and pure... simply sublime...The emotion of the singer was truly beautiful and made the experience of listening to the CD a magical experience.

My decision to buy this CD was based on a combination of previous reviews and the theme of the piece; both, as it turned out, extremely misleading.
This could have been, should have been, a great CD. The theme is romantically rich with possibilities galore and the artists involved are obviously talented and gifted, but this is not a great CD. It isn't even a good one. There's a strange flatness and utter lack of passion in the performances of these pieces that I find absolutely baffling. Even the orchestral passages sound weak and faded without any richness or depth.
The one and only exception, the only real high point of all 12 selections is "Dia Dha Mo Chaim". This is positively exquisite and the only reason I gave this CD any stars at all. It's beauty and mastery serve to show just how good these folks can be when they set their minds and hearts to it. Why they failed to make the effort on the 11 remaining cuts is sadly bewildering.
If you want beautiful music with a Celtic feel, created and presented with a romantic passion that'll knock your socks off, forget this watered down dud and check out Enaid's (David Arkenstone) "Avalon" or David Arkenstone's "Music Inspired by Middle Earth" & his "Spirit Of Ireland".
