How many movies have I seen which were terrible that nevertheless had impressive soundtracks? Well, okay, I didn't think the LOST IN SPACE movie was *that* bad, and it's okay to watch a couple of times for popcorn fun on a Saturday night I guess, but I hardly think it a good movie even though it does indeed convey a superb feeling of really *being* lost out in the cosmos.
The soundtrack, on the other hand, is something else again. The first eight tracks, not surprisingly (these are supposed to be pop songs from a sci-fi future time period, after all), are heavily influenced by David Bowie; in particular, Bowie's legendary landmark collaberations with whiz mastermind Brian Eno. As a result, they not only sound futuristic but also (except for track one) surprisingly noncommercial for a "pop soundtrack". They'll never play on any (present-day) radio, but put it on for anyone wanting to imagine what 27th century radio sounds like and they'll have a blast. The most concussive piece is BANG ON! by The Propellerheads, a wildly in-your-face piece of avantegarde pop that would have fit nicely on a Mike Patton side project. My personal biggest faves are the hypnotically otherworldly "I'm Here... Another Planet" and the hypnotically lovely orbiting of Space's own LOST IN SPACE composition.
The score can't compete with STAR WARS, but it's still lovely and fun.
Not everyone is going to like this, hands down. But if you are the more heart avantegarde music fan and dig the idea of a sci-fi soundtrack trying to sound pop-wise like it's been beamed here by accident through some time bubble then give it a shot! I love it and spin it much.
