The late Tupac Shakur's second album recalls the densely sampled sonic strengths of Public Enemy's Fear of a Black Planet, except here the bass lines are cranked and the sly samples tend to the gentler touches of Motown and Curtis Mayfield than James Brown. This contrast between hard and soft is appropriate because Shakur is as likely to sweetly honor black sisters ("Keep Ya Head Up") as he is to get angry in your face. Consequently, even with guest spots including the Ices Cube and T., 2Pac's strong raps remain this joint's real shining star. --David Cantwell
Customer Reviews
The rebel of the underground returns (4 and 1/2 stars) - Reviewed on 2006-12-21
After putting out a great first album that was politically charged, 2pacalypse Now was criticized by the dumbest vice president that we ever had. Tupac made his valient return with this album to settle the score. The album starts off with a great single called Holla If Ya Hear Me(also off of The Above The Rim soundtrack) where Pac drops some gems. He also drops jewels in the form of Point The Finga, Soulja's Revenge and the title track. Keep Your Head Up was one the most beautiful odes to black women that I've ever heard. Papa'z Song is where Tupac and Wycked passionately talk about their deadbeat fathers. If you thought Pac wasnt going to address Dan Frail, guess again! He mentions him in Pac's Theme and in Last Wordz. Ice Cube and Ice T join in on Last Wordz and Threat joins in on Peep Game. I liked I Get Around feat Digital Underground but that song shouldnt be what Tupac is remembered by. There are two songs I dont care for. Guess Who's Back and Deadly Venomz(feat Treach, Apache and Live Squad). Other than that, this album is susperb. Bottom Line: Strictly 4 My N***** is a criminally slept-on album that showed the positive side of Tupac(you know the side that only a few real fans embrace him for). He showed that he was a force to be reckoned with while giving you gems that most rappers these days wouldnt dare do. His death is an unfortunate loss for hip hop but his music lives on. Standout Tracks: HOLLA IF YA HEAR ME, POINT THE FINGA, SOULJAH'S REVENGE, PEEP GAME, KEEP YA HEAD UP, STRICLY 4 MY N.I.G.G.A.Z., THE STREETZ R DEATHROW and PAPA'Z SONG.
REST IN PEACE TUPAC AMARU SHAKUR.
