The former jazzman-turned-punk is now more middle-of-the-road than a yellow stripe. But Ten Summoner's Tales is by far the most engaging of his solo records. The singles "If I Ever Lose My Faith in You" and "Fields of Gold" prove the man can lighten up long enough to go deep. "She's Too Good For Me" would have been a good Police single if it weren't for the pseudo-classical midsection that takes its joke far too seriously. Still, you wish he would loosen up and enjoy the rock once in a while. --Robert Wilonsky

Sting's best solo record. - Reviewed on 2008-08-23

(more than...) Ten standalone songs not tied up between each other build a non-conceptual artwork, full of remarkable moments a few masterpieces and a couple of breakdowns, bringing Sting back from the shadows of dark jazz, politics, lost causes and death apology to the pop mainstream he left behind when The Police broke up at their success peak, almost a decade before, much more optimistic and colorful than his previous solo efforts proving, by the way, that musicians are not necessarily good politicians as well...
Simple pop songs and understandable lyrics under a solid musical foundation, with a pinch of jazz influence, altogether make this album a worthy piece.
No matter what the critics experimentalists said, this is Sting's best solo album.
