Shirley's best album ever with Johnny Mandel - Reviewed on 2008-10-09

The late Shirley Horn made a grand comeback when she reappeared on the Verve label and from them on it was pure bliss. That same word could apply to this Grammy winning album, her first ever with the impeccable Johnny Mandel creating gossamer arrangements for La Horn!! This was a match made in heaven for Shirley and Johnny Mandel much like Cole and Riddle or Riddle and Sinatra or Miles & Gil--you knew when these two got together that great music would occur. Of course Mandel has arranged for other artists as well like Sinatra, Tony Bennett or Natalie Cole but I believe that it was destiny that Shirley would choose him for this album and that it was no accident that it won an Grammy. Every track on this CD is pure heaven and if you ever feel depressed or just bummed out--put this one on (you won't regret it). We'll all miss Shirley--I saw her many years ago at Yoshi's in Oakland and she was as unforgettable and warm as this recording is. She was definitely like Paul Newman-- one of a kind!!

For the first time, I bought something from Amazon, Shirley Horn's Here's to Life CD. The ordering process was easy, and the product arrived in a surprisingly short time and in excellent condition. Amazon kept me posted on how and where the CD was tracking through the system and when I could expect delivery.

All men are not created equal, and Shirley Horn proved that. She was a gift from God, and possessed a talent unlike any I've ever seen. Her understanding of harmony, phrasing, lyrics, silence, dynamics, and keyboard technique was unrivaled. I'll never get over her.

"Here's to life" is one of the best jazz album of the last century; it's delicate, warm, soft, sweet, well played and well sung; Shirley is in top form, and so are her musicians.
Get this record and all her Verve catalog; you'll be completely satisfied with it. and you can understand how great Shirley is. God bless SH.

I own just about everything that Ms Horn has recorded, and is available to the public. My love affair with Ms Horn's music began with, "You Won't Forget Me." I didn't think she could top that. I was wrong. With the release of, "Here's To Life," Ms Horn subsequently changed my life. My New Year's Eve is NOT complete without listening to the title track of this cd. Not only did it change my life, but many of my friend's lives as well. This song has become our, "Auld Lang Syne." I am so grateful to Ms Horn and Mr Mercer for this song. It pretty much sums up my life's philosophy. I love your music Ms Horn, and you are missed...
