U.K.'s 1978 self-titled debut is almost always overlooked. Why? I couldn't even begin to know. With a lineup featuring John Wetton on bass and vocals (of King Crimson and Uriah Heep fame), Eddie Jobson on keyboards and violin (of Frank Zappa fame), Allan Holdsworth on guitar and Bill Bruford on drums (of Yes, King Crimson and Genesis fame), you know they are going to be superb.

And this record never fails to please. Songs like 'In The Dead of Night,' 'Time To Kill,' the instrumental 'Alaska' and the jazzy 'Mental Medication' are gems that I recommend to anyone who wants to hear great music.

But, as previous reviewers have stated, U.K. only lasted from 1977-1979. After the promotional tour, both Bruford and Holdsworth left; Bruford was replaced by former Zappa drummer Terry Bozzio, while Holdsworth was never replaced. By the end of the 'Danger Money' tour and after 'Night After Night' was released, U.K. went on hiatus, but never returned. Jobson joined Jethro Tull for 1980's 'A' album; Bozzio and his then-wife Dale formed punk group Missing Persons, and Wetton joined another supergroup, Asia.

But because the group were around for such a short period of time, their CD catalog is getting harder and harder to find in record stores. And what you find online from them is getting more and more expensive.

Overall, this is a masterpiece that should not be overlooked. It's an essential part of any record collector's collection.

I can't add much of substance to the myriad five-star reviews of this CD: quite simply, it's one of top progressive-rock CDs ever. Majestic, powerful, and jazzy, this CD is capable of taking the listener to a new land of pleasure and peace with each hearing. The individual musicianship is mesmerizing, and yet, incredibly, the whole adds up to even more than the sum of the parts. Thirty years after its release, this CD shines as brightly as it did on its day of birth. A gem indeed.

I'm not prone to write reviews, but after listening this CD again after almost 30 years ! (yes, what a coincidence !)I could not help to write this. This album, in my opinion, is one of the top 50 best all time prog rock works.

Meaty musical debut from the progressive supergroup in the late 70's attempts to capitalize on all that was good with vocal-based prog-rock, and largely succeeds. U.K's debut features everything one would expect from the all-star lineup of intelligent musicians: amazing instrumental interplay, advanced songwriting, and experienced technique. Unfortunately the disc does not end up escaping it's damning genre trappings alltogether, and a few poorly implemented musical ideas which reek of the usual talent overkill end up distracting from an otherwise crisp sonic assault of taut advanced rock.

Back in high school I was into Foreigner, Boston, etc...Still love those Groups..but I was also into alternative music and use to buy the clearance cassettes as the drug store....this was one of them and I was blow away when I first heard this...I still have the 99 cents ticket on the cassette.....This way be one of the best albums ever....This is in line with Pink Floyd, etc...

Way ahead of its time.. BTW I was never a fan of ASIA and when I heard Asia I said boy that vocal sounds like familiar!
