Arthur Fiedler was neither a great conductor nor a top-notch musicologist. But he had a great sense of his audience and what worked with them and he understood how his orchestra could deliver the musical goods.
I acquired this CD simply because several of the cuts were personal favorites back when I was in high school. In particular, I remember (if my memory is accurate) that WHBF-FM out of Rock Island, IL would play the "Pops Roundup" fairly regularly. And, boy, was that fun! The theme songs for a variety of Westerns that played while I was in high school got me jazzed up then--and recall neat memories even now. The collage starts with the themes from Bonanza, then Maverick, The Rebel, and Bat Masterson, and Gunsmoke (my favorite Western), and Wagon Train, and Wyatt Earp, and The Ballad of Paladin (from "Have Gun, Will Travel," another favorite), to Rawhide. Yippee! I still get some goose bumps listening to this so many years later.
Other Western standards are included. Red River Valley, Home on the Range, The Yellow Rose of Texas. Another collage--"Pops `Hoe-Down," including Arkansas Traveler, Chicken Reel, Turkey in the Straw, and so on.
The CD concludes with classics such as Streets of Laredo, Don't Fence Me In, and Deep in the Heart of Texas.
Great orchestral music? No. Lots of fun? Yes. And a bridge to those days way back when.
