Possum Kingdom and other Hard Dark Music - Reviewed on 2008-09-19

This is one of my favorite Albums of the 90's. This is one of the few albums that I've introduced to friends and have sold them on. Initially hooked with Possum Kingdom I bought the CD and immediately the rest of the album grew on me. Outside of Possum Kingdom the rest of the album remains largely obscure.

I find the album a bit harder edged than the grunge scene it surfaced in. It's loud and front man Todd Lewis' screeching leaves few songs unblasted. It can be a deal breaker for some. I loved it. If you really like "Possum Kingdom" then it's likely you'll be "all in" too. Of course a taste for a Harder edge grunge era rock will help.

The album itself has dark overtones and themes. Favorite songs of mine are "I Come from the Water", "Away", and of course "Possum Kingdom". A particular favorite of mine is the albums closing song, "I Burn". A haunting and momentum building song about the religious and almost sexually charged allure of fire to a pyromaniac. It builds to a great crescendo for both the song and the album.

This album has been one of my favorites for well over a decade now and sadly their follow-up album did not get the response it should have. Toadies are unique and bone crushing. I got to see them in St Louis last week and they were simply fantastic. One of the best live performances I have seen to date, and I have seen many (including Metallica/STP/G'nR). They were so gracious to stay afterward and autograph shirts. Vaden Todd Lewis shook my hand!

The new album is coming out and I had the pleasure to hear some new songs from it...you must buy the new album. The new album is true Toadies returning to their roots. This is a band that never should have disappeared...now we have the chance to grab them and never let them go.

Anyone who has grown up in the 90s or has been to a bar with a moderate 90s jukebox has heard the Toadies. Ask most of them who they are however, and you'll have a much tougher time finding anyone who knows the band by name.

Getting to the point: Possum Kingdom is the only reason to really buy or download this album. Its a great single with a dark but good story complimented by music with plenty of hooks. Unfortunately for the album the hooks start and end there. The rest of the songs have very basic and predicable chord progressions that really don't lend anything to the somewhat monotone lyrics.

I bought this album hoping to find another 90s gem like I did with the Screaming Trees a few years back but I can only report back unsatisfied.

Download Possum Kingdom and leave it at that.

Having grown up in the area and listening to this band as an adult since they started I think a first time listener will either love or hate this CD if they have never heard the band. Basically if you are a Todies fan you should have bought the CD years ago. First time listener....you'll either love it or hate it. This band has their own sound. I love it.
