Too many stories - Reviewed on 2008-02-08

I knew there were stories from successful adults in this book, but I did not expect them to start on page 11. The author described the book as having three sections - one for parents from the author, the celebrity stories, and resources. I was just very surprised and disappointed that Part 1 was so short.

This book has been the most inspiring and enlightening book I've read in regard to parenting since I had my second child. This review inspires a parent to look at a child in a whole new way. Since I've read this I now see that my daughter who is an "observer" doesn't have to be in the middle of it all. I am now actively seeking programs that work for her personality traits. The reason I almost didn't buy this book is because of the Amazon review that intimated that this was solely based from a man's perspective. That couldn't be farther from the truth. This book is total inspiration from "living legends" in the world. The message is unisex and solid. I loved it...I'm waiting for the next book with more stories from individuals who have achieved. This book is so worth it.

This is a collection of stories primarily written by men. Of thirty or so stories, four were stories by women- 2 athletes, 2 artists: No women leaders or scientists. Pitiful. Some stories are interesting, some one note. Take this book out of the library to check out some of the stories, and review the reference section in the back which talks about different programs for children - camps, etc. - by interest. I wish I hadn't been responsible for cutting down a tree to print the copy I bought on Amazon. Waste of resources.

How often do we and did we all feel that we were out of the loop where popularity and the "in" crowd is concerned. Well this book tells us as well as kids that the most talented individuals began with the same awkward feelings. I felt that this book sends out a message to parents, teachers and kids who just don't get the fact that all kids are special and the kid that you might consider a nerd today...can be a world innovator as an adult. Buy it ...it was worth it.

This book is a book that I actually purchased when I was researching the founding fathers of the Internet, and I came accross this book because Vint Cerf (one of the founders) contributed his story to this book.

Each story was contributed by someone who has succeeded in a different area. You have an academy award winning cinematographer, the first woman who crossed the Atlantic in a rowboat, a Nobel Prize Winner who discovered the hole in the Ozone Layer of our planet and then the famous participants...Paul McCartney, Mayor Bloomberg, Spike Lee etc. I loved the book for all the contributions. It said to my child that first of all no matter how you start out, you can achieve your goals. The moral is just stick to your guns and who you are. What I loved about this book is the celebration of a MOM embracing her son's individuality...I do that every day. Parents...it a quick read and a valuable one.
